Antique Kiddie Carousel

Come see Charlottesville's newest attraction, an antique kiddie carousel in front of the Virginia Discovery Museum at the East End of the Downwtown Mall.

Fred W. Scott Jr. of North Garden, VA has recently donated this historic kiddy carousel to the Virginia Discovery Museum.  It features six painted aluminum horses, beautifully restored by artist Kathy Peace Bland.  The horses are 1910 Mangell’s castings from an Illions carving.  Marcus Illions is one of the best-known carvers of carousel animals.  According to the appraiser, Masterson, Gurr, Johns, Inc. (New York and London) “this is the last known kiddie carousel in this country of its type”.  The carousel revolves, but the horses do not go up and down.  The carousel features a colorful rounding board and fabric canopy with finial. The carousel is approximately 9 ½ ft across and 8 ½ ft high.

The carousel is sponsored by a generous gift from the Charlottesville Parking Center, Inc.
