Museum Teen Internship

Love working with young kids? Have an interest in science, history, or art? Want to give back to your community while earning high school service credit? The Virginia Discovery Museum is looking for enthusiastic Museum Teen Interns to join our team from June to August! VDM welcomes more than 52,000 visitors each year, and summer is our busiest season. Interns help visitors explore the hands-on exhibits in our 10 educational play spaces and have the opportunity to assist with VDM’s birthday parties and summer camps for children ages 4-8.

A Few Things to Know …

  • Age: Applicants Must Be 15-18 Years Old
  • Total Hours: Interns Must Commit to a Minimum of 20 Hours over the Summer
  • Shifts: Typically 2-3 Hours Once or Twice Weekly (Both Weekdays and Weekends Available)
  • Deadline: Applications Must Be Submitted by May 31, 2017

Interns must participate in a Museum tour and orientation before their internship begins.

At the end of the summer, VDM will issue a certificate to all interns who have completed the program to be used as a recommendation letter and record of service.


Internship Positions

Museum Galleries Intern

Availability: Weekdays and Saturdays. Minimum 2-3 hours each week.

Responsibilities:

  • Greet Museum visitors and help families explore and use the exhibits.
  • Help Museum staff maintain a safe and attractive environment by tidying up exhibit areas, returning exhibit pieces to their appropriate location, and looking out for potentially unsafe conditions.
  • Assist with various programs and special events at the Museum and in the community.

Birthday Parties Intern

Availability: Saturdays and Sundays. Minimum 2-3 hours each weekend.

Responsibilities:

  • Set up and break down the party room.
  • Greet party guests and interact with children as they play in the Museum.
  • Assist with party activities and crafts and hand out goody bags.
  • Help Museum staff maintain a safe and attractive environment by tidying up exhibit areas, returning exhibit pieces to their appropriate location, and looking out for potentially unsafe conditions.

Summer Camps Intern

Availability: Choose from nine week-long camps to assist. Must commit to the entire week. Monday-Friday from 8:45 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Camp Dates

Responsibilities:

  • Greet campers and help them adapt to the camp environment.
  • Help prepare and set up camp crafts and activities and assist campers.
  • Supervise campers during playtime in the Museum.
  • Monitor the after-camp Lunch Bunch from 12:00-1:00 p.m.
  • Help Museum staff maintain a fun and safe camp environment by tidying up exhibit areas, returning exhibit pieces to their appropriate location, and looking out for potentially unsafe conditions.
