These performers will perform at the Meet the Musician events Saturdays in November.
November 1 -
Flory Jagoda maintains one of Judaism’s rarest and richest cultural traditions through her performance of authentic as well as original compositions of Sephardic songs. Flory grew up in this Sephardic tradition in Sarajevo, Bosnia in the musical Altarac family. One of the few Altarac members who survived World War II, Flory is intent on preserving and passing on the traditions of her heritage so that they will not be lost and tragically forgotten. Jagoda is a talented guitarist as well as a singer, and the echoes of Spain are strong in her playing as well. Susan Gaeta is her apprentice.
November 8 -
Matty Metcalfe & Crewe d’Bayou have performed live at
First Night Virginia, on-air at WTJU and WNRN, and on NBC, as well as numerous regional festivals and performing venues. With Crewe d'Bayou, Matty blends songs and styles from New Orleans musical icons--Professor Longhair, Allan Toussaint, and Dr. John.
November 15 -
Jeffrey Scott is a practitioner of Piedmont blues, having performed at such events as the National Folk Festival and the D.C. Blues Festival,. This style of playing originated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and southward. It's one of the oldest forms of the blues, and according to Scott, a style that is unique to the region. Scott learned the Piedmont blues style from his uncle, Virginia blues legend John Jackson, who passed away in 2002 of liver cancer.
Gregg Kimball has extensively researched traditional music in America. He organized the Virginia Roots Music project at the Library of Virginia including an exhibit, publications and performances. Kimball also plays traditional music in a variety of styles on the guitar and banjo. He has performed at many venues including the Carpenter Center, The Washington DC Blues Festival and with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra at the Landmark Theatre.
November 22 -
John Hamlett is a small-shop builder who has been making quality instruments in the hills of Virginia for over 30 years. Andy Thacker is a well established mandolin player whose playing has matured to mastery. He now explores the possibilities of the mandolin in various styles and his sweet touch is nothing short of revolutionary. He is the co-founder of the bluegrass trio Fair Weather Bums and has performed at many bluegrass and folk music festivals around the US.
