Why We Are Seeking Funds
VDM is embarking on a campaign to support the renovation of our current exhibits. After over 20 years in the same location we're looking to install
new exhibits that will reflect the history of our current location and offer a truly local learning experience. Some of our plans include:
Front Gallery Upgrade
The Discovery Garage ($15,000)
Visitors will be able to build and race Automoblox vehicles. These elegantly crafted and meticulously engineered wooden cars are made of interlocking pieces that can be interchanged between models. Designed with children's development in mind, Automoblox promote problem-solving, gross and fine motor skills, and visuospacial processing.
A-Mazing Airways ($20,000) (has been sponsored in honor of Peppy G. Linden)
This popular exhibit consists of a series of pneumatic tubes that carry balls and scarves along different paths as guided by the visitor.
The Virginia Frontier ($35,000)
We will expand our offering around the Showalter Cabin, a home built in the 1700s and transplanted into the museum. The cabin will now be accompanied by a professionally fabricated garden ($10,000 in honor of Louise Trudel) in which visitors can harvest vegetables. A stable ($20,000), also made of wood from the 1700s, will house farm animals specific to the era. Inside the cabin ($5,000), visitors will enjoy the new fireplace, dress up in historical costumes and experience life as the Showalter family did three centuries ago.
Historical Hallway ($25,000)
This hallway not only takes you to the Back Gallery, it will take you back in time!
Education Station ($10,000)
This multipurpose room serves as a classroom, a gallery, and a laboratory!
Back Gallery Upgrade
This gallery will become a thriving city that mimics our own, where children can enjoy imaginative play in permanent exhibits that showcase the local businesses their families patronize every day. Sponsors and partners will have the opportunity to bring their businesses to life, helping educate the community about what they offer. Opportunities include but are not limited to:
Theater ($25,000)
The Theater at the VDM will be the ideal place for visitors to stage a play, dress up in costumes, meet actors for special programs, and learn about local productions for families.
Bakery ($25,00) (has been sponsored by Panera)
Children can get cooking as they don bakers' coats, sort baked goods into bins, and work the register.
Beehive ($10,000) (has been sponsored by Albemarle Family)
VDM's celebrated observational beehive will receive a thorough update. Visitors will be able to watch the bees as they return from gathering pollen, learn about a colony's various jobs, and view all the frenzied activity within the hive. Our city's beekeeper will also be on hand to answer questions.
Grocery Store ($25,000)
Here, kids will get to do the shopping. From filling their carts to stocking shelves and staffing the register, their imaginations will be spurred by hands-on, interactive play.
Bank ($25,000)
Children will begin to learn the value of a dollar as they play with money, pretending to be the teller and customer.
Veterinarian's Office ($25,000)
Help bring out your child's nurturing side at the animal hospital, where their playmates are more likely to have four legs than two.
You Name it! ($25,000)
Take the opportunity to represent your unique business in our Local Community gallery.
