Museum Programs

The Virginia Discovery Museum offers interactive and hands-on drop-in, drop-off, and pop-up programming year-round to engage both children and adults, and we often collaborate with individuals, businesses, and organizations in our community to bring new programs to our visitors.

Weekly Programs

Weekly drop-in programs from September to May. All of these programs are free with Museum admission or membership and do not require registration.

Story Time

First & Third Mondays, 10:30 a.m.

Introduce children to new words and ideas through fun and engaging stories told in a variety of mediums.

Program Details

Recommended for all ages, with adult.

New Parent Meetup

Tuesday Mornings, 10:00-11:00 a.m.

Meet others starting their parenting journeys to chat about all things mom (and dad)! Nursing and napping babies welcome.

Children under 1 receive free Museum admission.

Toddler Time

Wednesdays & Thursdays, 10:30 a.m.

Sensory, gross and fine motor, and science activities at an appropriate developmental level for our youngest visitors.

Program Details

Recommended for ages 1-3, with adult.

Spatial Games Club

Wednesday Afternoons, 4:00 p.m.

Join Dr. Jamie Jirout and other researchers from UVA to play games and complete puzzles involving spatial learning.

Program Details

Recommended for ages 3 and up, with adult.

Discovery Club

Thursday Afternoons, 4:00 p.m.

Explore art, science, world cultures, and animals through crafts, experiments, games, special guests, and more.

Program Details

Recommended for ages 4-8.

Art Time

Friday Mornings, 10:30 a.m.

Join local artisan Irene Jennings as we create different types of art through fun, hands-on exploration.

Program Details

Recommended for ages 3-6.

Living Lab

Saturday Afternoons, 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Meet child development researchers from UVA and participate in short, fun activities as part of new and ongoing studies.

Recommended for all ages, with adult.

Recurring Programs

Periodic and occasional programs throughout the year for both children and adults. Some are free to attend, but others have a cost and/or require pre-registration as noted below.

$5 After Five

Weekly, mid-April to early September (Fridays, 5:00-8:00 p.m.)

Members and non-members alike enjoy after-hours play for just $5 per family after 5:00 p.m. on special late-play nights.

Has a fee. Memberships do not include free admission to this program.

Date Night Drop-Off

Once Monthly, September to March (Fridays, 5:30-8:30 p.m.)

Parents, need a Friday night out? Let us watch the kids while you enjoy some much-deserved time to yourselves.

Thought Leadership

Occasional Discussion Series for Parents. Times Vary.

Meet educators and researchers to learn about parenting, healthy lifestyle management, child development, and more.

Meet the Symphony Musician

Twice Yearly, January & February (Saturdays, 10:30-11:30 a.m.)

Meet a guest musician from Charlottesville Symphony for a musical story time and instrument petting zoo.

Program Details

All Ages, with Adult. Free to attend, but space is limited.

Robot Rally: Cubelets

April 26 & May 17, 2018 (Thursdays, 4:30-5:30 p.m.)

Discover Cubelets, pre-programmed modular blocks that combine in endless ways to create robots and encourage kids to use creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration.
