The
Virginia Discovery Museum is a dynamic, educational
setting that provides opportunities for hands-on
learning for children ages 1-10 and the adults who
accompany them. We are a place where curiosity,
exploration, creativity, and experimentation are
encouraged and nurtured.
Children are our common wealth. The Virginia Discovery
Museum unites and expands our community of children
by stimulating their imagination and by encouraging
cooperative learning. It is a place where families
learn together in creative ways through interaction
with real objects.
Special emphasis is on developing a global perspective,
a respect for the earth, an appreciation of the
diversity of people and the power of technology
in one's daily life. The Museum is widely viewed
as a central resource in the community.
The Museum has 6 full-time and 4
part-time staff
members, limited financial resources, over 140 volunteers,
and a dedicated Board of Directors.
The Museum is open to the public six days a week.
Visitation for FY 2009 was 59,395.
The success of the Museum depends on the ability
of staff to support one another, to provide rewarding
opportunities to volunteers, and to solicit the
partnership of businesses, educational institutions,
and community resources.
