The Virgina Discovery Museum has openings for Deputy Director, and a position of Exhibits Internship.

Job Description - Deputy Director

     Reports to the Executive Director and implements Board and Museum policies.

  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the Museum. 
  • Contributes to the strategic planning process and translates strategy into daily operations.
  • Ensures that visitors have a positive experience in the Museum.
  • Develops operations-related budget categories and monitors on a monthly basis. 
  • Ensures that the Museum has a robust volunteer program.
  • Supervises, motivates and inspires staff (i.e. Business Manager, Exhibits Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, Program and Gallery Managers, Gallery Assistants) and interns to excel and work effectively  as a team.
  • Oversees the development of Exhibitions that are age appropriate and relate to the Museum’s mission.
  • Develops revenue and non-revenue generating Programs.
  • Assists with public communications in document and internet formats.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 2 years of experience supervising senior level staff, demonstrating the ability to communicate expectations and performance standards, deliver feedback and listen with an open mind as people are encouraged to excel.
  • At least 2 years fiscal experience with budgets exceeding $300,000.
  • Experience with a non-profit and/or child-oriented organization.
  • Knowledge of the community and ability to seek and nurture partnerships.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with diverse audiences.
  • Computer literacy (Office 2003).

Job Description - Exhibits Internship

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Exhibit Coordinator to design and create changing back gallery exhibitions.  The back gallery changes approximately every four months with topics.
  • Assist with painting murals, sculpting, and building fun environments suitable for children.
  • Assist with maintaining current exhibits and updating them as needed.
  • Assist with research for changing exhibitions.  Upcoming exhibition topics include light and optics and going green.

Qualifications

  • Applicant must be creative.  Familiarity with tools preferred.  Skills in art and craft techniques preferred.
  • Commitment to and enthusiasm for the mission of the Virginia Discovery Museum.
  • Competency in multitasking and time management.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Positive attitude and lots of energy.

Job Type:  Unpaid Internship 10-20 hours per week.

The Museum is open to the public six days a week. Visitation for FY 2008 was
57,722.

The success of the Museum depends on the ability of staff to support one another, to provide rewarding opportunities to volunteers, and to solicit the partnership of businesses, educational institutions, and community resources.
