Museum Teen Internship

Summer Service Program for High School Students

Love working with young children? Interested in STEAM education? Want to get involved in your local community? The Virginia Discovery Museum is looking for enthusiastic interns to join our team from June through August during our busiest season! VDM welcomes 70,000 visitors each year, and interns will interact with visitors, facilitate learning through exploration and play in the Museum’s 15 exhibit areas, and assist with educational programs, summer camps, and birthday parties, all while gaining high school service credit and valuable work experience.

Apply to become a Museum Teen Intern online, or download the application and return the completed form to Director of Operations Lindsay Jones either by email at operationsdirector@vadm.org or in person at 524 East Main St. on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall. At the end of the summer, the Museum will issue a certificate to all interns who have completed the program to be used as a letter of recommendation and a record of service.

Intern Responsibilities

Museum Teen Interns serve in various roles, including as Gallery & Program helpers, Summer Camp counselors, and Birthday Party assistants, and both weekday and weekend shifts are available. From June to August, the Museum is open 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday for regular hours, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. the third Friday of each month for Date Night Drop-Off, and varying times on Sundays for birthday parties and private events. Intern shifts are typically for 2-4 hours once or twice a week – unless otherwise noted below – during one of these times.

Galleries & Programs

Weekdays, Select Fridays, and/or Saturdays.


  • Greet Museum visitors and and facilitate learning through exploration and play.
  • Maintain a safe, tidy, and attractive Museum environment.
  • Assist with monthly Date Night Drop-Off programs.
Summer Camps

Camps run Monday-Friday, 8:45 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Interns who want to help with a camp must commit to the entire camp week. (Camp Dates)


  • Greet campers and help them adapt to the camp environment.
  • Prepare and set up camp crafts and activities and assist campers.
  • Supervise campers during playtime in the Museum galleries.
  • Monitor camper lunch hour from 12:00-1:00 p.m.
  • Facilitate learning through exploration and play.
  • Maintain a safe, tidy, and attractive Museum environment.
Birthday Parties

Saturdays and/or Sundays. Times vary.


  • Set up and break down the party room.
  • Prepare themed activities for STEM and Pint-Sized Picassos parties.
  • Greet party guests and assist with party activities.
  • Facilitate learning through exploration and play.
  • Maintain a safe, tidy, and attractive Museum environment.
